Brief History of Mexico

  • Pre-Colombian
    • Over 10 thousand years ago the first people are believed to have entered what is now Mexico.
    • These people will become known as Mesoamericans which had their civilizations stretch from Mexico to Central America.
    • Notable Mesoamerican civilizations include the Mayans, The Aztecs, The Olmecs, and the Zapotec.
    • These civilizations cultivated many crops such as avocados, tomatoes, nopales (a cactus like plant), and Maize (corn).
    • This era is where Mexican culture and food culture gets its roots from
  • Colonial
    • On February 8th, 1517, the first Spanish expedition to modern day Mexico began and would later fail.
    • Hernan Cortes led his expedition into Mexico on the 22nd of April, 1519, which led to the destruction and conquest of the Aztec empire and the states surrounding it, beginning the era of Spanish rule over Mexico.
  • Independence
    • On the 16th of September, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo rang the bells in the city of Dolores as the sign to begin the rebellion which was the moment the Mexican War of Independence began.
    • On September 27th, 1821, Mexican forces entered Mexico city and the next day on the 28th the Mexican Empire declared independence, marking the end of the war for independence.
  • Modern
    • Independence did not mark the end of struggle for the Mexican people as the country would be led by dictators and then collapse into revolution whenever the dictators fell out of power.
    • It wasn’t until around until 1940 when the nation began to stabilize and grow.
    • Nowadays Mexico is a rapidly developing economy and is relatively stable, Mexico boasts over 127 million people, with Mexico city being the largest city in North America and the 6th largest worldwide.
