What Is a Sloppy Joe?

A Sloppy Joe sandwich consisting of ground beef and onions in a tomato-based sauce served on a hamburger bun.

The sandwich liley originated in Sioux City, Iowa in the 1930s. According to legend, the “loose meat sandwich” was the creation of a cook named Joe.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
  • 3/4 cup ketchup, or to taste
  • 1/4 yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar, or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 6 hamburger buns, split

Cooking Instructions

  1. Chop veggies – Finely chop the onion and green bell pepper.
  2. Make sauce – In a bowl, combine yellow mustard, water, brown sugar, and ketchup.
  3. Saute beef – In a deep skillet, heat oil over med/high heat. Add the ground beef and break it up as it is being cooked. Season with salt and pepper and add in the finely chopped onion and green pepper. Cook until vegetables are tender.
  4. Add sauce – Add in the garlic and cook until fragrant. Pour in the sauce and cook over medium-high heat until the sauce comes to a soft boil.
  5. Simmer – Reduce the heat to low and cook for 10 minutes, add more salt and pepper if needed.
  6. Serve – spoon the saucy beef mixture on toasted buns and serve as sandwiches.
