Background of the History of Lacrosse

Lacrosse is the oldest North American team sport. It started with Native Americans as early as 1100 AD. Lacrosse stemmed as a another option for war. In early lacrosse it was much different, the games lasted days at a time and it could be almost 100-1000 men in one game on an almost 2 mile long field. In 1637 European settlers watched and adapted the game of lacrosse. In the 1840s french settlers took up the game and began to evolve lacrosse. Eventually in 1859 lacrosse was named Canadas official national sport. In 1877 NYU played Manhattan College in the first ever college lacrosse game. The game after this continuously evolved into what we have today.
